I started with a big chunk of homemade clay. I would guess it is at least 35 pounds. I'm sure that 25 pounds would be plenty. I had way too much extra clay when I finished the slabs. My clay body contains a fair amount of molochite or porcelain grog. Any type of filler like grog or sand will help with drying issues. If I didn't have this clay, I would have bought a stoneware clay body at the local supplier. Any cone 10 grogged or sandy clay would work. You could also wedge in a little sand.

I have had a hard time finding sand for pottery. The only sand at the local lumber stores is feldspar sand. It is a flux and can really make a mess. You are looking for silica sand which is refractory. I have been using pool filter sand. It's pretty cheap and it works.
